House of Commons recruitment process frequently asked questions
Find answers to frequent questions about the application process for jobs at the House of Commons.
How do I apply for a role at the House of Commons?
All applications must be submitted on our recruitment portal. Once you find a job you’re interested in, click the ‘apply’ button to start your application.
Do I need to create an account to apply?
Yes, this allows us to protect sensitive information and ensures the security of your application. We can track your application throughout the recruitment process and communicate with you easily.
Why do some roles ask for application forms and others ask for a CV and supporting statement?
For some of our roles, we ask candidates to complete an application form. This allows us to ask a specific set of questions related to the role and allows you to highlight particular skills and experience. Read our application form hints and tips.
Can I submit a general application if I don’t see a suitable role?
We don’t accept speculative CVs. Instead, we recommend signing up for vacancy alerts. This ensures you’ll be notified as soon as relevant opportunities become available.
What happens after I submit my application?
After the closing date, your application will be submitted for shortlisting. This can take up to three weeks. Once shortlisting is completed you will be informed of the outcome. You will either be progressed to the next stage of the selection process – which could be a test or an interview – or your application will not be taken any further.
Can I get feedback if I don’t get shortlisted for the next stage?
Unfortunately, due to the high volume of applications we receive, we cannot give candidates feedback on their application forms. We do, however, offer feedback if you have been through the interview process.
What happens if I’m through to the next stage of the selection process?
There may be a skills-based test as part of the next stage or an interview. The interview could include a presentation. You will be informed in advance of what the next stage is, and you will be given plenty of time to prepare. Find out more information about what to expect at a House of Commons interview.
Are interviews conducted virtually, in person or both?

When would I start if I’m offered a position?
